Some tools have competition and some don’t. What sets Festool apart is when they go off the beaten path and blaze a new trail. In the spirit of the track saw and rails, or the Domino, comes the RO90. Don’t bother looking for a competitive comparison for the RO90. We already looked, and there isn’t one sander that does all that this one does.

5” orbitals have long been the most common sander size. This has never made a lot of sense to us, especially on the interior trim sanding side of things, because the most typical size in dimensionional lumber is 1”x4” nominal, which shakes out to ¾”x 3 ½. How the 3 ½ dimension has never been properly featured on a quality power sander is beyond us. 

For most tool engineers it would be enough to simply offer a handy new size, but to give it multiple personalities as a Rotex sander, a detail sander and a finish sander is exceptional. The result is a ton of solutions, for every type of sanding challenge. Understand that in its Delta configuration, the RO90 pretty much IS a DX 93, and uses the same delta abrasives as the 93. In its fine finish sanding mode, it produces like a 3mm stroke ETS. In Rotex mode, it’s the most absurd little power to weight experience you will find in a sander. And of course, it is backed by the legendary Festool warranty. 

As is always the case with Festool sanders, the RO90 has near flawless dust extraction when attached to a CT unit, regardless of which sanding mode it is used in.  Go from aggressive stripping, into corners with the delta, and finish sand orbitally…all very dust free. If you like exploring grits that are measured in thousands instead of tens or hundreds, the 90 is also a competent polisher with available polishing pad options. 

We won’t bother reminding you of the whole 30 day thing. RO90’s never seem to come back to us. But if you find something this sander can’t do competently, we would be interested to hear about it.
